Fort Sill was established as a cavalry fort in 1869. It’s home to the United States Field Artillery School and serves as a basic training location. The base contributes to the local economy and provides training and resources for area military members and their families.
The fort also helps attract technology and defense industries to the area. Lawton’s Fires Innovation Science and Technology Accelerator (FISTA) is an innovation park created to help advance missile defense, long-range precision fire technologies, and other applications that support defense operations. The park allows defense contractors, technology and science companies, and other related organizations to collaborate and share resources and facilities in a way that will benefit the companies, the military, and the community.
